Tyneham Village in Dorset – the village stuck in time along Dorset’s Jurassic Coast.

‘Mum’s the word’ when I tell you. This local gem is well off the tourist track but a favourite with the locals. A 45 minute drive from Summerbreeze Orchard and in my opinion, not only is it free (ish, they ask for a £4 donation for parking) but its a lovely walk to the bay, Worbarrow Bay, one mile away. Not many people know about the beach, so its quiet, but the scenery is stunning and a prime location for fossil hunting. Definitely, take hiking boots and swimming gear. The bay is not easy to get to, no shops, so I’d recommend taking a picnic.
Stepping back in time, positioned along Dorset’s Jurassic Coast is Tyneham Village. The village is trapped in a wartime state, a touching and appalling story. Just check Opening Times. The military needed their homes and lands, houses, school, church and other buildings to create a realistic training environment for D-Day preparations. The villagers were given 28 days to leave their homes leaving behind generations of history. Including the promise they would be able to return once the war was over. The last church service was 1943 with a note on the door: “Please treat the church and houses with care. We have given up our homes, where many of us have lived for generations, to help win the war to keep men free. We will return one day and thank you for treating the village kindly.”

The promise was that they would be able to return once the war was over. However, the war extended beyond its initial projections, and the village and its surroundings became an essential training ground for various military exercises. As a consequence, the return of the villagers never materialized. They didn’t know it at the time, but they would never be allowed to return to their homes.
